  • WAMI Awards

For the second year in a row, I took on the role of Musical Director for the WAMI (like a Wisconsin Grammy) Awards show, held in Milwaukee last night.  I got to lead the stellar house band (Jazz Orgy) in and out of all the tight spaces that a live award show permits.  Musical cues (i.e. 10-20 second clips while winners make their way to the stage) ranged from Quiet Riot to Katy Perry to Star Wars to Duke Ellington, with plenty of original Sly Joe songs flavored in as well.

The Jazz Orgy was on fire from the pre-show music until the house lights came on. Beside me was Mark Martin (keys), Mike Underwood (WAMI nominated drummer), Andy Mertens (bass), Steve Cooper (WAMI winning sax/vocalist), and Ryan Schiedermayer (WAMI nominated percussionist).  The band was so hot, that people were dropping our name all over the place!  The only words mentioned on mic more than "Jazz Orgy" that night were "and the WAMI goes to..."!  Lead singer, Black Wolf from "Kings Go Forth" even stopped by to sing a few verse of Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" as he went up to accept his Male Vocalist Award.

Big Congrats go to some good friends who won awards for their musical awesomeness!  Unity the Band (Reggae Artist), Ethan Keller (Pop Artist), and John Harmon (Hall of Fame inductee).  Be sure to check out what they're up to these days.  For instance, you'll be able to hear Kai-Man from Unity and Ethan Keller's contributions on the upcoming Sly Joe & the Smooth Operators album!

  • Girl Scouts Have More Fun

WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts) recently released a promotional video. Being a boy, I never knew much about Girl Scouts aside from their delicious cookies. Turns out there's a whole lot more going on there, which makes sense, since they're girls and all.

The video highlights the adventure, leadership development, community action, and international friendships that last a lifetime through WAGGGS travel. Sounds like fun.

Oh yeah, and they featured our song "Brand New Walking Shoes" through the whole thing.

  • Easy Tiger - The Interview

"Sly Joe is an infectious groove-creating machine of a man. I’m sure at some point you’ve heard his soulful swagger come singing through a pair of headphones. What’s that you say? You haven’t! Oh precious reader, how I feel for you. His laid back melodies, carefree love-approved lyrics, and potent rhythms blend together to form an excellent poppy funky earthy soul mix-up, a true delight to the ears. Songs such as 'Melody”'and 'The Meadowgrass and the Morning Sun' are chock full of emotion-fueled hooks that seem instantly timeless. After a few listens, one can deduce that Sly Joe’s use of the studio is most excellent at the very least."

  • Cover Songs

California recording artist Kyleellen will be singing three of my songs for her upcoming album; Ins & Outs, Surrounded by the Heart, and Beach Party!  She is a big advocate of the healing powers of music, specifically by singing everyday, and she's publishing a book soon too.

Christian Davis is producing the album.  He's worked with some pretty amazing musicians as well...Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, NKOTB, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys, the list goes on...
